What role do federal courts play in the U.S. immigration system?

Federal courts can review decisions of the Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA) relating to deportation orders and interpretation of the immigration laws. Federal courts can, in some cases, order the release of immigrants from ICE detention. Federal courts can also decide whether immigration laws and rules comply with the Constitution and laws passed by Congress.

Federal courts in the U.S. include District Courts, Courts of Appeals ("Circuit Courts"), and the Supreme Court.
