What is the U.S. Department of State?

The U.S. Department of State (DOS), or State Department, is a federal executive department responsible for carrying out U.S. foreign policy and international relations. The State Department also operates consulates in countries around the world which process visa applications for people who want to come to the U.S. The State Department is led by the Secretary of State.
