What is a bond?

If someone is detained as part of deportation proceedings, they may be able to get out of detention by paying a bond. A bond is a payment made to the government to make sure that a person will show up to all of their court dates if they are released from detention. A bond must be paid by a third party sponsor (e.g. a family member or friend). The person paying the bond needs to have lawful immigration status (for example, U.S. citizenship or LPR status).
