How does someone request a bond?

After being detained, ICE may give the detained person paperwork that either states the amount of the offered bond or says "no bond." If the detained person believes the bond amount is too high, or was not offered bond in the first place, they may request a bond determination hearing. The detained person can try to obtain a bond hearing in two ways: (1) by asking the immigration judge for a bond hearing at their first hearing or (2) by sending a bond hearing request letter to the immigration court. If sending a letter, the detained person must include their name, A-number, and the request for a hearing. Please note that ICE can also set or reset a bond amount on their own. If possible, a detained person should try to find an immigration attorney to help make a request to ICE for bond.
