Crimes Involving Moral Turpitude (CIMT)

Crimes involving moral turpitude are not defined by U.S. law but have been described as those involving depraved or immoral acts. Generally, CIMT involves fraud, theft, the infliction of grave bodily harm or lewd acts. Because this category is so vague, it is helpful to speak to an attorney when in criminal or immigration proceedings and determine if the crimes being charged involve moral turpitude and what immigration consequences a guilty plea may have.

This website should not take the place of a consultation with an attorney. We encourage all individuals involved with the immigration or criminal justice systems to consult with an attorney.
